DuraFuse Frames

(Steel Moment Frames, Made Easier)

Let’s be real -- steel moment frames are awesome, but they’re not exactly effortless. There’s a lot to juggle: lateral bracing, connection detailing, drift, constructability, and, of course, cost. And if a big earthquake hits? Many of the frames will need serious repairs. That’s why I wanted to share something that caught my attention:
DuraFuse Frames.

What is it, exactly?

In a nutshell, it’s a prequalified, code-approved moment frame connection with a patented fuse plate that prevents beam and column damage in severe earthquakes. That means:
✔ Less downtime
✔ Lower repair costs
✔ Happier clients
(Architects and owners might need a little help understanding the value -- Jared from DuraFuse's got that covered.)And when I say “code-approved”, I mean:AISC 358-22 Chp 15, HCAI (OSHPD) Pre-Approval, and ER report.

Sounds great… but does it cost more?

Nope. And actually, it often results in less steel tonnage because:- No seismic lateral bracing (kickers)
- No field welding
- No protected zone on the beam
- No span-to-depth restriction
- Higher stiffness (helps with drift, since beams don’t yield)
- Increased compactness limits
- Reduced field complexity
And it’s not just for seismic.
Many of these benefits apply even when wind governs the design.

What about engineering effort?

This is where it gets even better.
The DuraFuse team provides zero-cost design assist.
They’ll help evaluate your options, assist with design, and guide you through modeling the connections in RAM or ETABS.They also provide:
✔ Connection design (calculations, details, schedules)
✔ Construction support (they answer related questions when you need them)
In other words...
Potentially less effort for you!

Whether you have an immediate project in mind or just want to stay ahead of the curve, submit the form below.Jared will reach out with more info and answer any questions.(Oh, by the way, they’re working on something that could shake up retrofits for pre-Northridge moment frames -- potentially a game-changer for office-to-residential conversions. Staying in touch to be the first to know.)
